Angling on the River Ebro

The River Ebro is famous for angling and is probably the best in Spain for its wide variety of species.  This is due to the huge amounts of weed and nutrients to attract the fish.  Carp can grow to a massive 10 kg and more.  This year, the Spanish carp record was broken with a fish weighing 35 kg.  I have seen pictures of catfish as big as a man but although I have been in Spain for 10 years have never seen a live one.  Anglers use a variety of bait such as sweetcorn, chick peas, tinned cat or dog food, corned beef or luncheon meat or halibut pellets.  Someone I know who was not an angler fed the fish from the banks of the river near their finca every day at the same time and you wouldnt believe the number of big fish waiting every day for her.  Fish you may find in the River Ebro are:

Black Bass

These usually swim close to the banks and seem to prefer the cooler water near a dam.

Barbel

Carp

A good time to fish for carp is during the last days in May after they have spawned.

Catfish

Lubina

These can be found nearer the coast where there is a mixture of salt and fresh water.  The Ebro Delta and Amposta are good places to go.  You can get Lubinas in restaurants on the Delta but they are a very expensive delicacy.

It is not uncommon to find roach, rud and bream which are used by French and German anglers as bait to catch the bigger fish.  These fish are not native to the River Ebro.
